Household Utilities: Sustainable Energy: Grid.

Since September 1998 Energex consumers have had the choice of subscribing to a sustainable power source, 'earth's choice'. The revenue raised from subscribing consumers is diverted towards sourcing a power from renewable resources.

The Newton's elected to purchase earth's choice power from Energex. From September 1998 and March 2000 their household reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 9.1 tonnes.

Sustainable energy generated by individual households, such as solar power, can be sold back to the local power authority. Doing this has the following benefits:

1. Households generating sustainable power can avoid the purchase and maintenance of batteries.

2. The household generating sustainable power can avoid the peaks and troughs of power production and usage.

3. The local power authority is able to source this power as sustainable power.
